The policy is written as a standard development control policy to enable the Council to consider, and if it wishes, refuse applications for renewable energy facilities. The Plan should do more than this however, planning positively to promote types of development that are likely to be most effective in lowering the carbon demand and which are able to practically incorporate low carbon technologies as a means of providing heat and power to the accommodation within the scheme and beyond.

DM2 - Renewable and low carbon energy For limited life schemes such as solar and wind turbine, provision should be made in the policy for removal and disposal when they are of no further use.

We would like North Somerset to ensure that the Bleadon Parish Environment, including nature and wildlife sites, continues to be protected under the existing constraints and policies and that the fields remain as they are where at all possible.

We consider it likely that some areas will be unsuitable for some types of renewable energy, for example due to landscape and/or ecological constraints. Policy DM2: Renewable and Low Carbon Energy We welcome the inclusion of the natural environment in the criteria as a key consideration for any proposals for renewable and low carbon energy installations. We also support the need for a detailed review of the economic, social and environmental implications of any proposals for the utilisation of tidal power.

The key criteria include visual impact with particular reference to the views within and from the Mendips which is just about everywhere. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I find wind farms both visually appealing and also mentally comforting in that they show that we can get energy from an inexhaustible source. I would hate to have to tell my grand-children that we allowed the earth to overheat because we did not like the look of windfarms.
