DM73: Local Green Space The Trust welcomes this policy and would be interested to know how the Council is planning to designate any new sites in future, what process will be used and how local people and relevant organisations will be engaged in the process.

If policy NA2 is deleted (see the North West Nailsea Protection Group comments on policy NA2), then we ask that the land at north west Nailsea should be included in schedule 5 because it is the largest area of green open space in the north west side of town.

Belgian Avenue Field is of particular importance to the local community of Oakridge, Sidcot and Winscombe for a number of reasons that would seem to fit with the objectives of North Somerset's Sites and Policies Plan above: The cherished field contains a public right of way which is flanked by an avenue of beech trees that were gifted at theend of WW1 by the Belgian refugees as a thank you for the hospitality and protection they received from local people. The reason for nominating Belgian Avenue is that it acts as a gateway between Winscombe and the Mendip Hills AONB. The route across the field is via a public footpath through a historic, mature avenue avenue of Beech trees known as Belgian Avenue. Its name is given as it they were planted at the end of WWI to commemorate the support and shelter given by Sidcot residents to Belgian refugees.
