First Step Homes | 29 Jan 2019 | 1. North Somerset Local Plan 2036: Issues and Options Document Backwell Q19. Do you have any comments on the proposed vision for Backwell?
The Vision for Backwell is overly reliant on the success of the Strategic site, which does not allow for flexibility on delivery timescales. The Vision and development scenarios should also look at allocating non-strategic sites that are connected to the existing development and form logical extensions to the fringes of the settlement. It follows that the Settlement Boundary and Green Belt in these locations be adjusted to accommodate such sites.

Development at existing larger settlements is more sustainable and rapidly deliverable than Garden Villages. Proposed new road to access from the A370 to Station Road will open land for development but without a radically improved public rapid transportation congestion will be increased. Live-Work units that provide opportunities for small scale business start-up without creating outward commuting should be utilised. Need local employment, infrastructure investment first and connectivity.

Care should be given to infrastructure that will allow all vulnerable road users to cross the A370 and access the bridleway network.

Broadly supports the principles for the garden villages and urban extensions at Nailsea and Backwell; but will be critical that further iterations are informed by robust ecological evidence and supported by suitable strategic mitigation solutions.

Preparation of the local plan is premature and the proposals for 700 houses in Backwell unsustainable.

Why build at Backwell or Nailsea when could built in the Vale at Long Ashton with less environmental impact.

Seems you want to build a new town from a small village. Plenty of new developments are already happening. Plan is madness - destroying environment, wildlife, lives affected during and after the chaos, grid-locked roads. Why do we need to object again and again?

Backwell is well served for non-car travel by train and by regular bus services along the A370. So I can see the case for modest growth of Backwell.
