5) Trends in retail and the advance of new technology

Whilst I appreciate it is not possible to predict with great confidence how consumer activity will change over the course of the next 13 years there are certainly strong indicators which point to changing behaviours and expectations.

Trends over the past 25 years or more have led to the development of large out of town shopping centres resulting in the traditional high street shopping centres to languish and decay.

Towns like Totnes have developed a different model resulting in a vibrant shopping experience in the town centre successfully attracting independent traders whilst keeping chain operators out.

New technology and on-line shopping are both having a major impact on how the retail sector operates.

* I would like to see the Sites and Policies Plan produce a deeper analysis of how retail is changing and how best to accommodate and benefit from those changes.
