Significant additional housing is proposed for Weston Super Mare, the benefits of which can be harnessed to complement to the local authority’s ambitious regeneration agenda for the town. Nevertheless successful absorption of such additional growth will demand a high quality form of development that complements the town’s identity, and its distinctive landscape and seascape setting. Such emphasis is consistent with national policy and the delivery of sustainable development as expressed within NPPF paragraph 9 and 64. It should not be seen as preventing or discouraging appropriate innovation.

To deliver such a coherent future townscape for WSM might the opportunity be taken to include a ‘key requirement’ similar to that included within Policy CS30 Weston Villages? A suggested version of the aforementioned Policy CS30 for Policy CS28 might read:

Development must be locally distinctive, of a high quality and contribute to a comprehensive approach to place-making. It should enhance the existing character and qualities of the town including its townscape, landscape and seascape setting and make a positive contribution to Weston Super Mare’s identity.
