Our client supports the Council's Vision for North Somerset and is particularly supportive of the Vision that Market Towns, such as Nailsea, will increasingly support their populations and play less of a dormitory role.

Proposed amendment: delete 'Bristol International Airport' from the last paragraph and insert new text: The future planning of Bristol International Airport will be guided by the need to achieve a balanced approach which recognises the importance of air travel, and the need to control the impacts of the airport on those who live nearby and on the natural environment.

The over-emphasis on development of Weston is completely incompatible with concerns over global warming and flooding. If North Somerset is to grow in a balanced manner, attention should be paid to avoid policies which encourage distorted growth - ie the latest proposal in the Core Strategy for 9,000 homes in Weston, and only limited housing growth elsewhere. Growth is needed in the service villages to allow them to maintain or achieve sustainability.

Chapter 2 - Vision and Objectives: It is a well thought out 'wish list' that is workable.

The words are, as stated, aspirational albeit written by an optimistic futurist. The next 16 years will be, as ever, driven by budget constraints and people. They of course will be guided by 'what is in it for me'. For all that any plan is a good one if it is not too heavy handed.

"Service villages will cater for rural needs with their character and that of the open countryside protected from intrusive development". HOW??? This is not achieved by identifying the Service Villages as the preferred location for all the affordable housing needs of the service village AND its surrounding smaller satellite villages, and certainly not by "exception site" policy which supports the building of affordable housing developments in open countryside outside the Service Villages.
