My comment relates to the proposed housing and shop unit on Trendlewood Way, Nailsea.

In addition to the presence of bats there is a badger sett under this land. The badgers are seen most nights and the entrances to the sett can be seen in the woodland. 

The land was left for the benefit of the community. To be sure the intentions of the benefactor are honoured, and that the two charities retain the trust of the community, the community should be specifically consulted on the most appropriate use of the land. The charities may be able to argue successfully that they will use the profits of the proposed development to benefit the community, but the community should be able to evaluate such an argument before the development is approved.

An alternative development on the land, that could benefit the community more than housing,  would be a daycare centre for the elderly with dementia. The provision of respite day care in Nailsea is very limited, with carers waiting for places at the Granary, for example.  An innovative approach would be to build units not just for the care of elderly people with dementia but also for a social cafe such as exists in Long Ashton catering for all ages (including very young children), with associated physical activity spaces. 

The community should also be able to evaluate alternatives such as community allotments, community green recycling (as exists in Winford), community gardens, community orchard. 

If housing is approved it should benefit all sections of the community, and not be housing aimed at only one demographic. Care should be taken in considering a shop unit as this would alter the current nature of the local area considerably.
