We note that the Core Strategy document refers to a large urban extension proposed to the south east of Weston-super-Mare comprising up to 9,000 dwellings. The key diagram for the urban extension shows a number of new district centres, and the supporting text at paragraph 4.70 confirms that significant amounts of new retail floorspace will be directed to these locations.

The key diagram also shows that the eastern part of the proposed urban extension bounds the A370 corridor, immediately beyond which is the existing Locking Castle District Centre, anchored by a Morrisons foodstore. In the light of the proximity of this existing district centre to the urban extension, and given the potential adverse retail impact that might be caused to the centre by new retail floorspace, we consider it important that the Council properly investigates the scope for this existing shopping facility to serve the new urban extension before any new district centres are designated.
